Conscious consumerism.
Every purchase made is a vote to support a business and its practices, the good, the bad, and the really bad, horrific even.
Conscious consumption is the idea that a person engages in society with an awareness and understanding of how their choices impact others and the earth. Conscious consumers understand the impact their purchases have on the planet and the power of those dollars. Conscious consumers use that power to support companies making a difference, doing good.
Purchases tell organizations and our economy that you agree with everything they do and stand for. Whether we like it or not by supporting a company by buying its products or services, you are inherently supporting their social, environmental or philosophical ethics and actions.
To be a conscious consumer you have to make sure your money is going to companies in alignment with your values.
Your demand is powerful [purchasing is power]
The point is to live better, smarter, and pass it on to your pals… nobody wants to sit in a cold, dark box and drink warm beer, especially not alone. It’s about living a good quality of life—within your ecological (and economic) means.
Pause and scratch your curiosity. Do the brands you love, love the same things as you?
Are their values and yours even in the same universe?
Being a conscious consumer only costs the time it takes to search for businesses that share your values.
Things to ask yourself:
Where did this come from?
Did something have to be harmed or depleted to get it in my hands?
Do I really need it?!
Some instant gratification
Here are a few benefits of conscious consumerisms:
• Stops human rights violations and extorsion (child labor, crimes against women, etc.)
• Helps you to know your true impact, take responsibility, and make smart decisions
• Puts the power into your hands. As a consumer you control demand and that demand is power and agency
• Provides quality control for the safety and health of the products we come into contact with
• Puts quality control pressures on companies to ensure safe, manufacturing practices free from pollution.
How’s THAT for instant gratification, huh?!
